How are All-Star Teams Selected?

How the MLS All Star Team is Picked

Selecting an all-star team results from a blend of factors: input from supporters, as well as picks by coaches and league honchos. Through online polls or social media tags sanctioned by MLS, fans can have their say on who they want to see on the pitch.

There are 26 spaces available in the squad, with 12 going to players voted in by the public, official media polls, and votes from the players themselves. There are different weightings given to all of the votes here, so in actuality the fans probably have less control than they think, but nevertheless, it gives them a sense of ownership.

The next 12 spaces go to players chosen by the All Star team coach, in order that he has some control over his squad.

A further 2 spots are filled by the MLS Commissioner, presumably so they can ensure the most bankable stars are included even if they haven’t managed to find a spot on merit.

So 26 players make the squad in total, giving the coach plenty of control even though he hasn’t chosen all of the players he will be working with.

Filling out these rosters is therefore a complex task. While the public vote counts for something, it’s not everything; managers and other execs also get a say in who makes the cut, mindful of deserving candidates who may have flown under the radar.

Notable Moments in the History of the MLS All-Star Game

Over the years, there have been countless memorable moments associated with editions of the MLS All-Star Game. Some of these events have stood out more than others and left lasting memories with soccer fans everywhere.

In 2008, the game featured one of the league’s most high-profile players, David Beckham, in his first All-Star appearance. What’s more, he was taking on an English Premier League club, West Ham United. Beckham’s presence was highly anticipated, and he didn’t disappoint. The MLS All-Stars won the match 3-2. The game was incredibly exciting, and demonstrated that the league could not only attract and feature world-class talent, but beat top international teams too.

The 2014 All-Star Game saw the MLS All-Stars took on German powerhouse Bayern Munich. The match was notable for the intensity and competitiveness, which are often less emphasized in exhibition games. This game was significant because it demonstrated the quality and depth of the MLS talent pool. Bayern Munich was a formidable opponent, boasting several World Cup winners and top international players.  The MLS All-Stars triumphed with a 2-1 victory, and Bayern’s manager, Pep Guardiola, did not take it well, refusing to shake the All Star coach’s hand.

Lastly, in 2017, the MLS All-Stars took on world famous Spanish champions, Real Madrid. This in itself made the game memorable, but the fact that the all stars held to to a 1-1 draw in regular time was really something. It was an 87th minute goal that saved them too. The game was decided by a penalty shootout, with Real Madrid emerging victorious 4-2, but it had been a rollercoaster to watch.

While not every edition of the game has produced such notable occurrences, it is clear that the MLS All-Star Game continues to provide excitement and entertainment year after year for soccer enthusiasts around North America.
