Leagues Cup 2026 gets underway on Tuesday, the fourth of August, and the biggest story this time around has nothing to do with who lifts the trophy. For the first time in the tournament’s history, some of the matches are being played in Mexico.
All 18 Liga MX clubs and 18 MLS sides are involved across the next month, with the final set for the sixth of September.

The short version is that MLS clubs only play Liga MX clubs, there are no ties and the top sides from each league fight it out in a knockout bracket. This year, though, it’s the venues doing the talking.
Toluca, Tigres and América Host on Home Soil
Up until now, Liga MX clubs have had to travel north and play the whole thing in Major League Soccer grounds. That changes in 2026, with the three top-ranked Mexican clubs having home matches to play.
Toluca get two games at the Estadio Nemesio Diez, whilst Tigres and Club América host matches as well. The first-ever Leagues Cup game on Mexican soil comes on the fifth of August, when reigning Liga MX champions Toluca take on the holders, the Seattle Sounders.

This is long overdue. Asking one side of the competition to play every game away was never a fair fight and Mexican support is as loud as anything you’ll find in North American soccer. It should give the whole tournament a lift.
What Seattle and Miami Are Playing For
Seattle go into the tournament as defending champions after winning it in front of 69,000 fans at home last year. They open against Toluca, so there’s no easing them in.
Inter Miami will fancy their chances too. As the reigning MLS Cup winners, with Lionel Messi still pulling the strings, they host Monterrey on the eighth of August, which will be a reunion for new signing Germán Berterame against his old club.
There’s more than pride on the line too. The top three finishers all qualify for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup and the winner skips straight to the Round of 16. That’s a proper reward for a good few weeks’ work.
If the ‘soccer’ matches the build-up and those nights in Mexico deliver, this could be the best Leagues Cup yet.
