There were whisperings of Casemiro joining Inter Miami long before it was announced, and yet, his signing is now under investigation by MLS.
Despite this, he was still able to play a full 90 minutes for the club in a 1-0 win over CF Montréal.
There is no question that Casemiro is a brilliant acquisition for the Herons, but why are they being investigated and why was he able to play if his signing potentially broke league rules?
Everyone knew a Brazilian superstar would make headlines when he left Manchester United and came to Florida, but no one expected they would be about this.
The Reason Behind the Investigation
Casemiro was a free agent when he joined Inter Miami, since his contract had ended with Manchester United in June 2026. So there was no issue with the transfer itself. He is officially an Inter Miami player and that is why he was allowed to play for them.
The problem came from the fact that LA Galaxy held discovery rights over Casemiro.
If you don’t already know, MLS clubs can select up to five eligible players for their Discovery List. It means they have priority if another team in the league tries to sign those players. They can’t force the player’s hands, but they get first dibs at discussing a move if they still want that player.
With LA Galaxy holding the rights for Casemiro, Inter needed to reach an agreement with them before completing the signing.
The two clubs have reached a settlement, but there is an allegation that Miami contacted Casemiro’s camp before obtaining the rights to do so from the Galaxy. The league hasn’t announced any findings as of yet, and Miami have not been found guilty of breaking any rules, a tampering investigation is under way.
It’s worth noting that Inter Miami have previous in this sort of scenario. In 2021 they were heavily punished for roster violations.
MLS fined the club $2 million and removed more than $2.27 million in allocation money after finding that several players had been incorrectly categorised or had undisclosed agreements. That does not prove guilt in this case of course, but it means the club will likely be properly scrutinised.
A Quick Note on Discovery Rights
If the idea of discovery rights is new to you, there is a strong chance you are finding this whole thing quite ridiculous. After all, it’s not as though LA Galaxy unearthed a hidden Brazilian talent in Casemiro – he’s one of the biggest names in world football. He’s won 5 Champions Leagues and made more than 600 club appearances for some of the biggest football teams in the world, so it’s safe to assume the Galaxy were not the first MLS club to hear about him.
In reality, discovery rights are more like a reservation system. It’s a way of stopping MLS clubs competing against each other for a player in such a way that would drive the price up.
It’s not a guarantee of singing anyone, but it is an advantage if a club want someone’s signature, because they have the right to talk to them first. If Inter Miami spoke to Casemiro before LA Galaxy were able to, they will have broken the rules, because this could have weakened the Galaxy’s negotiating position had they wanted to enter the race for his signature.
Just because the two clubs have reached an agreement after the fact, it does not erase any breach of the rules that might have happened, and the league will need to take action if this turns out to be the case, to maintain the integrity of their rules.
How Casemiro Fits in at Miami
From a footballing point of view, Casemiro is a brilliant signing for Miami. Let’s be honest, he would be a brilliant signing for any Major League Soccer club, but he’s a very good fit for the Herons.
He’s 34, fresh from the World Cup where he started all five matches for Brazil, and looks in great shape. Having come directly from the Premier League, he should find the pace in MLS much easier to cope with – and he wasn’t exactly struggling in England.

Some people are thinking of him as Sergio Busquets’ replacement, but they are very different players. Where Busquets controlled the game with careful positioning and passing, Casemiro is much more physical and aggressive, as well as being dangerous in the air in front of goal. So you can expect to see him score and get booked fairly often. With De Paul alongside him, Casemiro should be able to provide the defensive protection to give Messi more freedom. Defence is a known issue for Miami, and Casemiro will be able to shore that up.
His contract runs through the 2027 Sprint Season with an option until June 2029, and he reportedly does not occupy a designated player slot. This is impressive roster construction if everything is above board, and we will soon find out if it is.
